Carmel Water Quality and Filtration Solutions
All across the country, when you go to different cities, there are different things to see. Every area has its own unique characteristics. You’ll even notice differences with the water. From the water in your morning shower to the ice in your drink, water quality changes depending on the area’s water treatment process and other filtration methods.
Water Quality for Carmel Residents
All of the city water in Carmel, Indiana comes from groundwater that’s drawn from about twenty different wells throughout the Upper White River Basin Watershed. After that, the Carmel water treatment process works to make our tap water safer to use and to drink. However, there are some reasons why you might want to go the “extra mile” with your own water quality at home. Starting with decent tap water and then improving the look, smell, and taste with in-home softening and filtration can give your family great water year-round!
1. Hardness Levels
Indiana is notorious for having hard water, or water that has high levels of dissolved minerals. While the minerals themselves are relatively safe, they can be a real pain around the house. They’re the cause of those chalky water spots on your glassware, scratchy laundry, and the crusty deposits on your faucets and other fixtures.
While the city of Carmel does soften the source water initially, it’s only to around 8 grams of hardness. This is actually considered “hard” on the water hardness scale, which is why you’ll still have hard water problems. In fact, the latest Carmel water quality report shows that the water hardness range can get as high as 28 grains/gal. For truly soft water, you need to have a home water softener filter those minerals before you ever turn on the tap.
2. Chlorine Disinfectant
After other filtration measures are complete, the water treatment plants will then add chlorine. This helps prevent our tap water from picking up new bacteria as it flows through the pipes to our homes and businesses. The problem, though, is that most of us don’t really want to drink chlorinated water. First, it tastes funny. (Think of chlorinated pool water.) Second, it can cause some problems around the house, somewhat like hard water.
Chlorinated water can actually degrade the rubber gaskets in our water-using appliances, leading to more frequent repairs. It can also cause the colors of our favorite clothes and laundry to fade. And it’s a pain around the bathroom. Having chlorine in your water dries out your skin and can make your hair feel damaged and dry too. Proper in-home filtration can keep your water truly safe and clean. Homeowners that install a water softener with chlorine removal are able to avoid all of those problems!
3. Heavy Metals
The other concern with unfiltered tap water is that there may be additional contaminants that are more difficult to remove. Chlorine as a disinfectant can’t tackle things like heavy metals. With older plumbing and a higher pH level in your tap water, it’s possible for lead to leach into your drinking water. What’s more, harmful PFAS contaminants (also known as “forever chemicals”) can get overlooked. It takes a special type of filter to remove PFAS.
Fortunately, you can protect yourself just by having good home water filtration. The water treatment plant can’t control what happens to the tap water as it travels from their site to our tap. That’s why it’s so important to run our water through additional filtration steps at home.
